INTER-VARSITY RUGBY

While in more recent times the VRU only gave passing acknowledgement to the involvement of Melbourne University (and much later Monash and Latrobe) in inter-varsity rugby they reported in detail on early games and, as seen above, actually hosted the competition. [Photo above courtesy W.Gillies]

At the time of this inaugural match Melbourne University was one of the four new clubs which had only recently commenced to challenge for the Dewar Shield and, just two weeks earlier, against strong opposition, been enrolled in the University Sports Union.

That affiliation was on the condition that they met all their own expenses and played on grounds other than the University Oval.

Apparently this did not apply to the Inter-Varsity game, possibly because it was held on a weekday under the aegis of the VRU.
